Cutter Suction Dredger equipped with a mud pump and suction system. During operation, the cutter head loosens sediment from the riverbed, and the mud pump then sucks the slurry through the suction pipe and discharges it via the discharge pipe to the shore or into a barge. 

They're suitable for digging soft materials like sand and silt, though models with toothed cutters can also handle harder soils such as gravelly clay.
